Compiled by Gayle Edmunds

Khabonina Qubeka is an actress, dancer and choreographer best known for her role as the third Doobsie (after Lindiwe Chibi and Khanyisile Mbau) on the soapie Muvhango. Born in Orlando West Extension, Soweto, in 1981, Qubeka was raised in Johannesburg and attended Queen’s High School in Kensington, after which she earned a dance diploma with Moving Into Dance. In 2007 she trained the cubs for The Lion King theatre production at Monte Casino in dance and acting workshops.

Other career highlights include extensive travel in Europe with Richard Loring’s African Footprint; performing in the 55 Congress de la FIFA in Marrakech; and performing in Tribute to the Pops in Palma, Majorca, Spain.

She won an FNB Dance Umbrella Award and danced in Sun International’s Sun City Odyssey Extravaganza and she recently started Khabodacious Moves Dance School in Orange Grove in Joburg. Khabonina is currently starring in the new series of The Lab on SABC3.

What were you like at school?

I was extremely energetic, I loved everything about school.

What did you want to be when you were little?

I wanted to be a performer. I used to sing and dance in front of the oven door at home checking out my reflection in it.

What makes your blood boil?

People who take other people for granted.

What makes you cringe?

Bad drivers. C’mon now, we have enough going on in our country, in fact in the world. We don’t need bad drivers adding to it.

Who is your inspiration?

My mother. She is my living proof that everything is possible and achievable.

Do you have any secret ambitions?

I want to be a secret agent or I’ll take being on CSI Miami. (How hot is that cast?)

What would you like to say when you get to heaven?

Told you I was right behind you.

What’s your least favourite thing about yourself?

My impatience at times.

What’s your favourite movie and why?

Face/Off – they were literally literal about the title and the concept was amazing.

What are you afraid of?

Losing my ability to entertain and make people laugh and feel good about themselves.

What is your favourite colour?

Red.

How do you spend your Sunday afternoons?

Church, food, TV galore and maybe read or go through scripts.

What would you put in your personal ad?

Khabonina Qubeka – all or nothing.

Which song holds special memories for you and tell us what those memories are?

Lebo Mathosa’s album Lioness, all the tracks on it take me back to being on stage performing with her.

What do you know for sure about life?

“When you do what you love and have passion for it, the universe conspires in your favour for you to achieve it!” Paulo Coelho.

What is your greatest regret?

I avoid Mr Regret at all costs. He acts as if he is your comforter, but he is just a waste of time and energy.

What is your favourite soapie, and why?

The Bold and the Beautiful, it has been running for so many years, yet they are still able to capture you with their storylines. I love it.

How would you define ‘success’? And have you achieved it?

Success is being at ease with your achievements and constantly monitoring and appreciating your growth. I am achieving it.

What is your next project?

A huge music and dance project – stay tuned, or else…

When did you last have a good laugh, and what made you laugh?

I was being interviewed by Noeleen Maholwana-Sanqu’s producer Msizi Nkosi of 3Talk about men and I realised just how funny both sexes are.

What is your definition of hell?

A life with no love.

Name one thing you’d never travel without?

Lip gloss – No matter how bad things get, a lady always has to have her gloss on.

If your house burnt down and you could save three things, what would they be?

My insurance policy, everything else is replaceable then.

Name your top three books.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Erroness Zone by Dr Wayne Dyer and Still Grazing by Hugh Masekela.

If we could make three wishes come true for you, what would they be?

Open my mini Fame Academy where children can learn to sing, dance, act, create visual arts and swim too; buy my mother her well-deserved mansion; and wish for three more wishes.

Do you have a spiritual discipline that sustains you, and what is it?

Yes. I pray. I meditate. Yoga really brings me back to my centre.

The Lab is on SABC3 @ 21:30
