Sending out SOS to save siSwati

  Print article
  email story

I AM concerned about the way the standard of the siSwati news bulletin on SABC1 at 5pm has been dropping.

This is in particular reference to the new presenter Nokubongwa Lukhele, who I think is not articulate enough and does not have the voice for broadcasting.

When the siSwati/Ndebele bulletin was launched, I was excited and proud that we were being given an opportunity at last. Now I doubt if the SABC news management really cares because if they did, they would ensure that they use people who are professional and can read well.

I've been watching Lukhele for months now and have realised that she might never improve.

As a siSwati-speaking person, I find it insulting that the SABC can employ incompetent people like Lukhele. There are a few siSwati words she cannot even pronounce properly .

On the other hand, the other Nguni bulletins such as Zulu, Xhosa and Ndebele have excellent news presenters.

I challenge the MD of SABC News, Snuki Zikalala, to watch just one bulletin and see for himself. I am pleading with him to bring back presenters like Maxwell Maseko, a presenter on SABC Africa, and Tshepiso Radebe, who reads the news on SAfm . They make bulletins worthwhile, are articulate and make me proud.

Please Zikalala, save the siSwati news before it's too late.
