BARELY a month after Coca-Cola Popstar Letang Tlome became engaged to boyfriend Katlholo Motsisi, the couple have called it quits.

Sources close to the two said Tlome had moved out of Motsisi’s house in Orchards, north of Tshwane, and moved back to her mother’s house in Soshanguve three weeks ago.

They said Tlome broke off the engagement because Motsisi had apparently used her as a punching bag.

“Letang got fed-up with Katlholo because whenever they had differences, he beat her up,” said a source.

“The last straw was three weeks ago when he beat her black and blue. Her face was badly bruised and she had to be treated by a doctor.”

Neighbours allegedly had to intervene several times to stop him from hitting her.

Tlome has obtained a protection order against Motsisi.

The couple got engaged last month when Motsisi put an engagement ring in Tlome’s bag without her noticing. She saw the ring a day later while out shopping and immediately called Motsisi to accept his proposal.

The couple have been together for more than six years. They have a 10-month-old daughter, Opelong, and planned to have a Western and a traditional wedding later this year.

Tlome refused to comment and Motsisi dismissed the allegations.

“I am not an abusive person. It is a long story and I am not prepared to discuss the details of our relationship with the media,” he said.

He did not deny or confirm that it was over between him and Tlome.

Tlome hit the headlines when her group, Adilah, won the Coca-Cola Popstars competition in 2003.

Adilah, which also includes Karabo Motlhabi, Thembisile Ntaka, Itumeleng Kgosana and Refiloe Motha, won the Best Newcomer award at the South African Music Awards in 2004 for their album, Sesifikile. The album sold 40 000 copies.

The group’s latest album, Zibondiwe, was released in April last year.

The group won the Metro FM best group category award last month.
